Another Gospel?

Recently one prominent Emergent Church leader came out with a video proclaiming that Jesus death and resurrection was just a retelling of the many myths of dying and rising gods such as Mithras and Dionysus. Although many apologists have debunked this claim made popular by the Zeitgeist film, this popular leader still proclaimed it for the sake of being a universalist. At the end of his video, he proclaims that “we are the gospel”. This is gnosticism, the idea that we all have an inner-divine spirit. It’s played out in many movies, most blatantly in the Matrix trilogy.

A second gospel is the social gospel. This is the idea that Christians are required to “fix” what’s wrong with the world by joining forces with secular agencies and governments in a variety of programs and the PEACE plan from another prominent Emergent leader. This comes from “kingdom-now” theology. It’s works based idea is that we can usher in God’s kingdom. This goes completely against what the Bible says will happen. Things are getting progressively worse not better, just as Jesus proclaims in Matthew 24.

The prosperity gospel is a third prominent false gospel. This states that if you come to God, He will bless you with material gain, health and holy laughter. As crazy as it sounds, this is extremely popular world-wide, not just in America.

Jesus, John, Paul and Peter all warn of false teachers. Paul defines Justification in Romans and in Galatians he has strong words for those that preach another Gospel:

Galatians 1:8 (KJV)
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

As Christians, we have to be clear on what the Gospel is. Paul defines it for us:

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (KJV)
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

If anybody claims that “we are the Gospel” or that the Gospel must include any additional work, by definition, it is a false Gospel.
